Responding to Disclosures in Prevention
DETAILS
Everyone deserves to be heard, respected and supported on their journey to safety, especially when they reach out for help. In prevention work, we connect with people every day and our intentional, non-judgmental environments often create the space for disclosures of family and gender-based violence.
When someone discloses an experience of violence how we first respond is critical. We must believe them, validate their experience and follow their lead when providing safe and relevant referrals. It is common to feel unprepared or uncertain about how to respond safely and sensitively, and feeling uneasy or unsure can be a barrier to providing the crucial support needed.
This three-hour virtual interactive training is designed for prevention practitioners to build the essential knowledge required to embed safety within prevention program design and the key principles to provide safe, simple and sensitive support.
By committing to this training, you will build and consolidate your capacity to embed safety and supports within your prevention program programs—and your personal practice— to provide support that is always guided by victim-survivors.
What you will learn:
- Build understanding of key principles to support embedding safety and supports into prevention initiatives
- Build the ability to recognise indicators and to ask questions to identify family violence, as appropriate to their role in delivering prevention initiatives
- Build knowledge of safety principles to ensure that support is informed by victim survivors
- Develop the skills to provide safe, respectful and sensitive response to a victim survivors disclosure
