2026 marks 10 years since the landmark Royal Commission into Family Violence and there is still progress to be made – continued commitment and investment is essential. The task now is to build on what works, address what remains unfinished and invest in building the next phase of the system.

We know the devastation family and gender-based violence causes victim survivors including ongoing trauma, families in crisis and lives lost. These are the preventable human costs on the community.

Economic modelling shows that $554 million per year in core investment in preventing and responding to family violence would return $2.8 billion in benefits to victim survivors, communities and the Victorian economy. This is prevention of a cost, not new spending; for every dollar invested, nearly six times that is saved.

Safe and Equal are calling on the Victorian government to commit to prioritise funding, across four priority areas:

  • Support children and young people as victim survivors in their own right
  • Sustainable investment in the sector
  • Safe, secure and affordable housing
  • Strengthening justice responses and access to legal support
