The following are resources, research papers and other material arranged under headings for each knowledge indicator. They are to support and further your learning for Capability Three.

Their role and remit in contributing to safety planning where there is an immediate risk of further violence

Undertaking essential secondary consultation with specialist family violence providers and/or statutory authorities to make appropriate referrals for victim survivors and/or perpetrators family violence

  • Safe and Equal discuss the importance of appropriate responses to family violence including referral of clients to specialist services.

Practitioners and services involved with multi-agency responses to family violence

  • Family Safety Victoria  The Statutory Authority was established to drive key elements of Victoria’s family violence strategy and coordinate support for families to help them care for children and young people.
  • The Orange Door (Support and Safety Hubs) Support and Safety Hubs are currently being established across Victoria to provide an entry point for women and children experiencing family violence and families who need support around parenting and the wellbeing of children. They can also work with perpetrators to challenge and change their behaviour.

Referral pathways for victim survivors and perpetrators of family violence, including services for specific populations/groups

  • 1800 RESPECT 1800 732 732 – A 24-hour national service providing telephone and online information, counselling and support around family violence and sexual assault. Support and debriefing for those working around family violence are also available.
  • Djirra 1800 105 303 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) – Telephone counselling service for Aboriginal people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence.
  • Dardi Munwurro’s Brother to Brother 1800 435 799 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) – Telephone crisis support for Aboriginal men with family violence issues.
  • Centres Against Sexual Assault (CASA) CASA’s provide crisis and ongoing support to people who have experienced sexual assault. The CASA forum website lists each CASA by region.
  • InTouch – Multicultural Centre Against Family Violence 1800 755 988 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) – Free and confidential support services for migrant and refugee women.
  • Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) – Private and confidential 24/7 phone and online counselling service for young people aged 5 to 25.
  • MensLine Australia 1300 78 99 78 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) – Telephone and online counselling service for men with emotional health and relationship concerns.
  • Men’s Referral Service 1300 766 491 – Provides telephone and referrals to men who are using violence. Alongside information, referrals and support for family members, friends and professionals. This service is the first point of contact for professionals who are working with men presenting as victims of family violence.
  • QLife 180 0 184 527 (3pm to midnight, every day) – Provides Australia-wide anonymous, LGBTI peer support and referral for people wanting to talk about a range of issues including sexuality, identity, gender, bodies, feelings or relationships.
  • Rainbow Door 1800 729 367 – A free specialist LGBTIQA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Gender Diverse, Intersex, Queer, Asexual, BrotherBoys, SisterGirls) helpline providing information, support, and referral to all LGBTIQA+ Victorians, their friends and family during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. This service is run by Switchboard Victoria.
  • Specialist Family Violence Services Specialist family violence services provide support, safety planning and referral for women and their children who have experienced family violence. Find specialist family violence services by region on the DVRCV website.
  • Safe Steps  1800 015 188 – A 24-hour service for women experiencing violence to access specialist family violence workers who can assist with risk assessment, safety planning, information, support and referral.
  • Seniors Rights Victoria 1300 368 821 (10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday) – Free and confidential support services to support older Victorians experiencing abuse.
  • Sexual Assault Crisis Line 1800 806 292 – An after-hours service providing telephone crisis counselling support, information, advocacy and referral to Victorians who have experienced sexual assault and their non-offending family members or friends.

  • Victims of Crime Helpline 1800 819 817 or text 0427 767 891 (8 am to 11 pm every day) – Provides support to adult male victims of family violence and victims of violent crime.
