Dr Joumanah El-Matrah has more than 30 years of leadership experience across family violence, gender equality and human rights. She is nationally recognised for advancing systems reform, strengthening specialist services and embedding intersectional, rights-based approaches that improve outcomes for individuals and communities.
Dr El-Matrah previously served as CEO of the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights, where she led transformative national initiatives grounded in intersectional feminist practice.
A trained psychologist with previous frontline experience supporting victim survivors of family, gender-based and sexual violence, Dr El-Matrah also brings deep practice knowledge into policy and advocacy.
Throughout her career, Dr El-Matrah has championed culturally responsive, community-led approaches that centre the voices and experiences of victim survivors while addressing the systemic barriers that prevent safety, justice and equity.
As CEO, she is committed to working in partnership with members, victim survivors, communities and governments to build on the sector’s progress and drive the transformational change needed to end family and gender-based violence.
